Omantel League: Suwaiq held; Shabab defeats Dhofar to narrow lead at top
Omantel League leader Al Suwaiq's lead at the top was trimmed to four points after it was held to a 1-1 draw by Oman Club at the Sohar Sports Complex while second-placed Al Shabab registered a 2-0 win over defending champion Dhofar at the Seeb Sports Stadium on Friday.
Both Suwaiq and Dhofar's 15th-round matches were delayed as the teams featured in the AFC Cup games last week.
In Sohar, Suwaiq took the lead in the 42nd minute through Mahmood Mabrook but conceded the equaliser 12 minutes later when Mohammed al Mashari scored for Oman.
The draw meant that Suwaiq's three-match winning streak was halted but it still leads the table with 38 points. However, Shabab's emphatic win, its third in a row, over Salalah giant Dhofar cut the lead at the top to just four points with Shabab’s three points on Friday helping it reach 34 points.
Shabab's goal-scorers were Robert (24th minute) and Arnest (80th).
Dhofar and Oman have 16 points each, the same as Saham, Sohar, Al Salam and Mirbat.
Standings after 15th round: 1 Al Suwaiq (38 points), 2 Al Shabab (34), 3 Al Nasr (24), 4 Al Arouba (22), 5 Al Nahda (21), 6 Muscat (19), 7 Al Mudhaibi (19), 8 Fanja (18), 9 Dhofar (16), 10 Oman (16), 11 Saham (16), 12 Sohar (16), 13 Al Salam (16), 14 Mirbat (16).
