MoHC celebrates International Museum Day with lectures and workshops
The Ministry of Heritage and Culture (MoHC) is organising a number of programmes to celebrate International Museum Day. The two-day event started on Wednesday at Bait al Zubair museum and features lectures and workshops. The ministry is also hosting a group of specialists from security agencies and museums, in addition to organising an exhibition of archaeological artefacts.
Raya bint Mohammed al Kindi, director, Museum Department, MoHC, said, “The sultanate is working towards increasing the awareness of the important role played by museums. On this day, which we celebrate with institutions around the world, our speakers will share their technical expertise and highlight the strides taken by MoHC since signing the Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property 1970 with Unesco. MoHC continues to use all tools at its disposal to prevent the illegal trade of cultural belongings.”
The International Council of Museums established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness on the role of museums in the development of society, and it has been steadily gaining momentum ever since. In 2016, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 35,000 museums hosting events in some 145 countries.
